Patterns do not get created spontaneously. Typically a careful examination of history, doing comparisons of sample cases are needed.
Sometimes patterns from entirely different categories provides inspiration for new subjects. If I have read this site correctly the architectural patterns provided the idea to examine computing patterns.
A lot of trial and error is needed on the road to discovery of good patterns
