European Monetary Union

Subset of the EuropeanUnion countries that share a common currency (TheEuro). Participating countries are:

  1. AustriaEurope
  2. BelgiumEurope
  3. FinlandEurope
  4. France
  5. Germany
  6. Greece
  7. RepublicOfIreland
  8. Italy
  9. Luxemburg
  10. TheNetherlands
  11. Portugal
  12. Spain

(Hence the non-EMU EU countries are Denmark, Sweden and the UnitedKingdom.)


Other countries have also adopted TheEuro as their national currency. Examples are Bosnia and Montenegro.

But because they don't participate in the decision making of the European National Bank, they do not belong to the EuropeanMonetaryUnion.
