I thought in Japanese, "Mono" was a thing as in a device or object. "Koto" was a thing as in an event or action.
Elsewhere, I see "seppukumono : situation calling for seppuku*". Found randomly on the internet, so therefore will be either almost correct or completely and utterly wrong.*
