Writer and critic. Originally from Australia, but made much of his career internationally and in the USA. Art critic of Time magazine for over 20 years. Like many Australian intellectuals, somewhat unpopular with (if not ignored by) the general public at home (TallPoppySyndrome). Made a popular TV documentary American Visions about the art/history of the US. Best selling books include The Shock of the New (ISBN: 0070311277 ) and The Fatal Shore: The Epic of Australia's Founding (ISBN 0394753666).
